For many years, the Philippines has continued to strengthen its presence in the field of sports. One of the most significant changes in our national athletic identity was the declaration of arnis—a Filipino martial art—as the official national sport of the Philippines, replacing the traditional game sipa, through Republic Act No. 9850.
While arnis indeed embodies discipline, strength, and national pride, one cannot deny that this shift has also influenced our cultural identity in the sporting world.
Long before the law, sipa had already been recognized as a traditional sport deeply rooted in Filipino history. It is a game that showcases agility, endurance, and skill, traits that mirror the character of the Filipino people. However, since the implementation of RA 9850, arnis has taken the spotlight as the official national sport. This move aimed to promote our native martial art and elevate it on the global stage.
Yet, this transition has also raised concerns that the popularity of sipa might gradually fade, especially among the younger generation.
One of the main challenges brought by this change lies in the lack of consistent support for the development of both sports. Arnis requires structured training, quality equipment, and proper programs to reach more Filipinos nationwide. Meanwhile, sipa should not be left behind. As a traditional recreational sport, it deserves sustained attention and promotion to keep it alive in our cultural identity.
Beyond promoting arnis, there should also be clear programs to preserve and revitalize sipa as part of our national sports heritage. It should not be relegated to history but instead be given enough space in our education and athletic systems, especially in schools where cultural values and sportsmanship are first learned.
In the end, the true essence of supporting our national sport does not rely solely on official titles or legislation, it lies in concrete action to nurture and strengthen it.
The government, private sectors, educators, and citizens must work together to sustain both arnis and sipa.
Because in truth, both represent who we are as Filipinos—strong, skillful, and proud of our heritage.
We must ensure that neither is forgotten, for each holds a vital kick and strike in defining our national spirit.
