Believing that a true mentorship comes from passion, Outstanding School Paper Adviser Analyn Tejada urged fellow advisers in South Cotabato to coach journalists not for promotions or certificates, but out of genuine love for the craft and for their students.
Speaking before hundreds of campus journalists and advisers during a journalism event at Tampakan National High School, Tejada reminded educators that coaching should go beyond requirements for professional advancement. She emphasized that while certificates of participation are now part of DepEd’s promotion criteria, these should not be the primary motivation for guiding student writers.
Tejada shared that she began her journey as a school paper adviser without any formal background in journalism. Determined to learn, she studied the field independently until she mastered it, proving that dedication and passion can lead to excellence.
“Kung ilalagay natin ang puso natin sa isang bagay, matututunan talaga natin ito,” Tejada said. She encouraged advisers to “mahalin ang campus journalism at mahalin ang mga bata,” explaining that teaching becomes easier and more meaningful when it is done with heart.
Tejada, recognized nationally for her contributions to campus journalism, continues to inspire both students and advisers across the region. Her message served as a reminder that the foundation of effective journalism education lies not in awards or promotions, but in sincere mentorship and dedication to the next generation of storytellers.#
